About our social groups

Stay active and connected with your community

Keeping active, staying socially connected and taking part in enjoyable and meaningful activities is vital to living well as we age.

That’s why Merri Health offers an exciting social support program to suit a variety of tastes.

Join a range of activities based on your interests.

We offer a variety of interest-based groups, outings and special events throughout the week, to help you build new connections and enjoy a range of different activities.

Whether you or your loved one wants to exercise in a group, learn to cook healthy meals, tend a garden, or get out and about with people at a similar stage of life – we’ve got you covered.

And if you don’t see a group that sparks your or your loved one’s interest, we’d love to work with you to start one!

“I look forward to coming every week and seeing other clients and staff. It’s relaxing and friendly – reminiscing and chatting. I also enjoy the meals!” – Percy

What’s on

Nurture vegetables and flowers in raised garden beds at our well-established garden. Connect with other gardeners as you water the plants, maintain the space and get involved in the parts of gardening that interest you.

The group meets every Wednesday morning in West Brunswick.

We offer the opportunity for members to socialise with other men or women in gender-specific groups. Activities are chosen by group members, and you can decide on the day which activity you’d like to take part in. For example, at the Tuesday men’s group, some members might choose to spend time together in the garden while others play indoor bocce or sit down for a cup of tea and a chat.

Our women’s groups meet every Monday and Tuesday, while our men’s group meets on Tuesdays.

It’s important to us that our social groups are culturally inclusive. Our staff and group members come from a range of cultural backgrounds and speak a variety of languages, including Turkish, Italian, Greek, Filipino, Hindi, Arabic and Spanish.

We currently offer social groups for Italian-speaking people, which meet on Mondays and Fridays.

There is also a group where people who speak Turkish, Greek, Arabic and/or English can socialise together every Wednesday.

We are open to starting new language-specific groups. Call us on (03) 9386 3575 or email socialsupport@merrihealth.org.au to express your interest.

To support people with memory loss, our skilled staff use evidence-based methods to encourage social interaction, participation, fun and wellbeing in this weekly group program. This group can also provide respite support for carers.

The group meets every Thursday.

Stay motivated as you complete the exercise program prescribed by your exercise physiologist in the company of new friends who are doing the same.
Although joining any of our groups will help keep you or your loved one active, Movers and Shakers is an exercise group focused on seated movement.

The group meets every Monday in West Brunswick.

Visit a variety of destinations around Melbourne as chosen by group members, including galleries, gardens, shopping centres, restaurants and cafes. Chat and make new friends as you explore.

We have outings on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Celebrate special days throughout the year and join in on events, including:

  • Mother’s and Father’s Day
  • cultural days
  • barbecues
  • breakfasts
  • dinners
  • high teas
